All Things New (Revelation 21:5)

And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

We are now getting dangerously close to the end of Advent. I pray that God has been working mightily in you to make something new in your heart.

Advent (as well as Lent) are, I find, seasons in which God can do some really amazing things in the human soul. (There is a reason the Church has been doing it for so long, after all.) And so, when you came into the beginning of Advent this time around, was there anything you wanted God to change about you? Maybe you didn’t have anything particular in mind, or maybe you had no intention of changing at all – nonetheless, did God have his own idea of what he wanted to do with you?

This morning we hear the prophetic words of Christ to St John in his revelation. “Behold, I am making all things new” says the ascended Jesus. I am certain that in context he is speaking about the new heavens and the new earth: the end of time, and the dawn of the world to come.

But you, Christian, are also something he is making new, through the work of sanctification being done by the Holy Spirit daily in your life. And so, this Advent, what is new? What can you look back on and confidently say “that is the old me; may I never go back – and if I do, may the Lord rescue me and keep me on this new track”?

God of the resurrection: draw us up out of the grave of sin and into the new life you have made for us. And give us eyes to see the change you are working in us, and hearts of gratitude to rejoice over you for that.
