Psalm 19

2 Kings 14:17-15:7

Matthew 22:1-14

More To Be Desired (Psalm 19:10)

More to be desired are they than gold,
    even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
    and drippings of the honeycomb.

There seems to be, to my observation at least, a bit of a revival amongst young adult men in the pursuit of wisdom. It is a far cry from my own early days and those of my peers – but we won’t go into that now.

Some of the classics are coming back out again, which is fun to see – one of my personal favourites was a work written during the decline of the Samurai in Japan, called “The Way Of The Samurai”, which reminded me of useful Christian habits like washing your face in the morning, saying your prayers, and devoting the majority of your headspace to the interests of your Master.

Of course, as any studious Bible reader knows, the concept of wisdom itself is far more cosmic than just thinking smart thoughts and doing smart things. Wisdom is wrapped up in Christ, the eternal and divine Crucified One. In him is the wisdom of God; when he speaks, wisdom itself is heard.

For all the pop-wisdom today, and the revival of pop-wisdom from generations past, nothing helps us towards wisdom as much as God and his word. Meanwhile, the pursuit of God’s wisdom is, according to today’s Psalm, the highest calling for the human being. God’s testimony makes the simple wise, and it is to be desired more than gold.

How much time do you spend pursuing wisdom? How is the wisdom of God revealed in his testimony?

Lord, whose glory is declared in all made things, and whose wisdom is revealed in your word: give us a heart to desire you above all else, that we may depart from the fleeting changes of this world and rest in the eternal nature of your divinity.
