Hope In His Name (Matthew 12:21)


...and in his name the Gentiles will hope.


I hope for a lot of things. And I’m sure you do too – hope that that sore tooth holds out just a bit longer; hope that our children will manage to do alright in life; hope that interest rates don’t rise too much; hope that we might have KFC for dinner.


Hope is about something that is yet to come that we look forward to. There is always more to hope, but that is where I am for the time being, at least.


All those things I listed earlier, things for which we might hope, are what the Bible would call a “dead” hope. That is, they have an end point. The thing will happen, and then we move on with life. But in Jesus we have what the Bible calls a “living” hope: that is, as Jesus lives, so too does our hope. When we get what we hope for – to see Jesus face to face – then life won’t just go on as usual. There will be something greater after that, and after that, and after that. The dizzying heights of moving ever closer into a fuller knowledge of the infinite and living triune God will continue on for a joyous eternity.


When was the last time you got something you hoped for? How did it compare to a closer walk with the Lord Jesus?


Christ in whom we hope: you are before all things, and by your word all things live or die. Inspire in us a living hope in you by your Holy Spirit, that we may rejoice in the hope you have given us.

Approaching from the valley below them comes the cries of iniquity of the cities of the plain: Sodom and Gomorrah. Rising from their feast, the three men turn from blessing Abraham and Sarah to executing divine judgement. And the story just gets darker from here. But Abraham, in his boldness, has this immortal conversation with God, a conversation that uncovers for us whispers of Jesus’ words about people who are “salt” and “light”. God desires that none should perish, but that all should turn from their sins and live. If you know nothing about statues, you will at least know of Michelangelo's David . It seems strange that a piece could hold public fame for so long, but if we think about it theologically, then it’s endurance makes sense. Consider what the artist intended it to be: a display of pure Renaissance ideology. An era when men began to imagine themselves as artists and engineers, and their own being their life’s work. Anyone could be anything, and this is what Michelangelo is saying with his statue. Behold, the perfect man, formed from rough rock by the hands of a self-driven man. The irony here is the subject.
