The Golden Rule (Matthew 7:12)
[Jesus said] “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”
I think it must have been an Enid Blyton story about a little girl who made friends with some Christian children. The Christian children were telling her that whatever you ask Jesus for, he will give. She learned pretty quickly that Jesus will not, in fact, grant you a pony for your birthday just because you ask. And so there was an opportunity for her friends to disciple her in how Jesus gives you what you ask for in accordance with the Scriptures, which is, Jesus gives us what is best for us, even if we don’t recognise it at the time.
When we come across today’s verse, which is also known as “The Golden Rule”, we ought to remember who it is that is saying it. Because, wouldn’t it be nice that if I were to give my neighbour a new Swiss watch, he would give one to me as well, because I wish he would give me a new Swiss watch?
Jesus has just yesterday given us a helpful reminder about the difference between pursuing material things and spiritual things. He wants us to focus on pursuing spiritual things, because God is more than happy to supply us with all the material things we need. Jesus wants our hearts, not a new Swiss watch.
And so, what do you think you are lacking in your soul? Joy, peace, generosity, patience, or anything else? How might giving that to others supply more for yourself in return?
Jesus our Prophet and Law-Giver, who calls us to love as the summary of divine teaching: grant us a spirit generous in giving, that we may enjoy your generosity, and be witnesses of you in the world.
