Hidden Under Cover (Psalm 31:20)


In the cover of your presence you hide them
    from the plots of men;
you store them in your shelter
    from the strife of tongues.


Secret gossip is always used for nasty information. But what would we call it when it was used for sweet words and comforting things?


Reading through some of these Psalms makes one wonder if God keeps some of his redeeming work on the down low just so that it is more impressive. There is something about understated and unstoppable power. And when that power is the love of God and his protection of his people, it becomes almost elegant, or noble.


Yes, our lives fall into trouble almost endlessly. Everywhere we turn there are problems that we cannot solve ourselves, and need to God to sort out for us. And God does sort them out for us – but he does them with finesse, in an understated sort of way. There’s no ranting and raving, or wild schemes. Just the providence of a loving God, a crucified Saviour, and the Person we call our Comforter and Friend. Let the enemies of God gnash away; we will stay right where we are, happily sheltering under the cover of the Lord’s presence.


What problems are you facing right now? What might be the Divine answer to them?


Lord, our Rock and our Refuge: lead us through this life, so that as we are wasted with grief over wickedness, we may rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love and protection.

First, it is that we do not invite God into our presence. Rather, God comes alongside us, where we are, hiking through the wilderness. God gets down into the dust with us and puts up a tent. There is a reason why John made so much of this tent language in his first chapter: that the Word became flesh and pitched His tent among us. Whichever part of the Bible we are reading, we see God coming to the people, rather than the people moving towards God.   Monday, July 25, 2022 Psalm 62; 63 Hosea 1 Romans 4:1-12 He only is my rock and my salvation: my strong tower, so that I shall not be moved. The prophecies of Hosea are rich with vivid imagery. Look at these names: firstly, “Hosea” means “salvation”. So too do the names Joshua and Jesus. Then Hosea has three children: “God scatters”, “Not pitied”, and “Not my people”. This is because the children are part of the marriage between Hosea and Gomer, which is an image God is showing to the nation. It is to our profit that God has used real-life events to communicate spiritual imagery and divine truths. We find it very easy to understand our relationship with God as being a faithful wife to a loving husband. We can reconcile this message with what Paul has to teach us today in Romans. He makes the very important observation that Abraham was given God's righteousness as a result of his faith before, not after, his circumcision. Again, this is God using real-life events...
