God Of Wonders (Psalm 77:14)
You are the God who works wonders;
you
have made known your might among the peoples.
When you want to cheer yourself up, where do you direct your thoughts? What, when you think of it, makes you happy?
If we are overworked, we might look forward to an upcoming holiday. Maybe we might look forward to that thing we will treat ourselves to on our birthday. Perhaps there is a big family occasion on the near horizon.
But what about when things get really tough? When the dark night descends, and our soul refuses to be comforted?
Today’s Psalmist, which, according the superscription is our friend Asaph, directs his thoughts to God, and all that God has done. He is worried that perhaps this time God’s steadfast love has ceased; that God, in his anger, has shut up his compassion. And so Asaph remembers the wonders of old, and meditates on the Lord’s mighty deeds.
Here is our soul-medicine. If God has done it before, God will do it again. And there is nothing that restricts God’s compassion and steadfast love: the waters trembled; his lightnings lighted up the world; the earth trembled and shook. He took his people like a flock, and he continues to do so. This we know, and this it shall ever be.
What memories and past experiences do you enjoy remembering? What is in your catalogue of good memories might be helpful for your spiritual health in the future?
God of the past, present and future, whose way is holy: keep your glory always in our remembrance, that we may rest in the promises of your goodness, no matter where we might be in life.
