Who Is He? (John 9:36)
[The blind man] answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?”
Who is this, who has done such an amazing thing?
Things that once held our attention now become forgotten; new interests have sprung up, and what a wonder that they have. Why no more interest in things of the pasts, of things that fade? Why such passionate desire for the things that last, for the eternal, the heavenly?
Someone has done this to us. Someone is bringing us out of the past into a new and glorious future. And who is he, that we may believe in him?
We can wonder at the heavens, which declare the glory of God. Celestial spheres, incomprehensibly huge, spinning through space at mind-bending speeds at distances too far for us to imagine. Or the firmament of the earth, which tells of God’s handiwork, layers of molten lava, stone and rock, mud and soil, from which bursts all manner of animal and plant life. And yet the greatest marvel in the universe is a redirection of human affections, from things that die, to things that live. Conversion sits as the crowning glory of God’s miraculous works.
Who is he, that does such wonderful things? His name is Jesus, and he is alive and well, still working works of light in the world. We know a little of his power in our own lives; and we marvel at his same work across the rest of humanity through time and space. Truly, he is worthy of our worship.
What about God’s creative power in the world impresses you? How does it lead you to worship the one who has worked this creative power?
Son of Man, lead us through the wonders of your works to you who do them, that we may know you, and worship you as you are and as you deserve.
