The Heat Of The Day (Genesis 18:1)
Every time summer rolls around I find myself amazed at the fact that we manage to get anything done for these three months of the year. And while I’m sure there are some minor differences between our sub-tropical summer and Abraham’s Middle Eastern summer, he still had the right idea by resting under a tree in front of his tent during the heat of the day.
Yet for all the comfort he managed to find in what I am sure would have been a regular daily routine of cooling off, he immediately jumped up and ran from the tent door to meet these three men who he calls “O Lord”.
We know that hospitality to strangers was an extremely important part of the culture of the day. Abraham was doing his expected duty by jumping up to look after them. But he also seems to understand that he is speaking with God, and there is an even greater duty to jump up and serve God whenever he asks.
Serving God when we don’t want to can be even more difficult than working during the summer. Who can be bothered washing the dishes when the humidity is steaming and all you want to do is find a shady spot and a breeze? And who can do the hard work of the kingdom when the heat of the enemy is pushing back so hard? Yet work we must – because now is the time of the harvest of souls, and our Master is out meeting people everywhere we look.
What is God calling you to do right now? How much of an effort do you feel like you have to make to fulfil your calling? How can Jesus supply the grace you need?
O Lord, if we have found favour in your sight, do not pass by your servant. Give us grace to serve you with joy, so that all barriers to your kingdom may fall before you glory.
