Psalm 27

Lamentations 3:1-30

John 15:1-16:4a


Observance: Tuesday in Holy Week


One thing I asked of the LORD, that I will seek after; to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in His temple.


On Friday, Pontius Pilate will have Christ whipped and beaten by his soldiers. After this torture, he will bring the wounded Christ out into full view of the bloodthirsty crowd and declare “Behold, the man!” (John 19:5)


This is a far cry from the start of Jesus’ full-time earthly ministry, when John the Baptist saw Him approaching and announced “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29)


At Christmas, we beheld the Lord as a baby. Then we beheld Him as a strong man in the prime of His life, working miracles, raising the dead, and preaching the gospel of repentance and life. In the coming week we will behold Him broken on the cross, shivering and gasping until the moment in which He gives up His Spirit.


When He returns, we will behold Him as He truly is; riding a white horse, being addressed as Faithful and True. His eyes will flash like flames of fire, and He will be wearing robes dipped in blood: and everyone will know that this is the Word of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, creator of heaven and earth, hater of sin and lover of goodness. (Rev 19:11-16)


Behold your beautiful saviour. Behold Him as your God, as your brother, as your friend. In the death of Christ is the death of death, and the gate has been opened for us to behold His infinite beauty for all of eternity.

  Monday, September 11, 2023 Psalms 28; 29 1 Kings 7:51-8:21 Acts 26:19-32 Observance: Deiniol, bishop (d. 384) “ Short time or long – I pray to God not only you but all who are listening become like I am, except for these chains.” The great many blessings of being under the protection of the blood of the Lamb fill our hearts with joy and peace. To have the Almighty Creator of the universe, the One who sits above the flood, filling the temple of our being with the cloud of His presence is what it truly means to be human.   Monday, September 19 Psalm 45 Nahum 1:15-2:9 Ephesians 4:17-28 ...be renewed in the spirit of your minds... It is far too easy to read some of these Pauline lists of virtues and vices and feel like we have gone back to the dark days before the Reformation. The idea that if we behave ourselves then we can call ourselves “good people” is pagan, not Christian. Paul feels very strongly about how Christians behave, he “affirms and insists” upon it. But it is because of what has already happened that we should mind our step, not because of where we are going.
